Open House

BP's ad unwittingly promotes our house. Their ads for the Solar Decathlon are all over the DC metro system.

On the Mall

We're here, in Washington D.C! Feels great to be back. The house went together smoothly the first night/morning. The deck was completed yesterday and for some the adrenaline lasted late into the night and so the planters went in too. We lifted the batteries into their home in the deck (a future gardening tools box, I think) and wired them up. Solar panels are getting a slow start because the sun is intense and the heat sweltering. At least it's not raining. Everyone's excited because we just received the pod and there was a giant jar of peanut butter inside. Spirits are up and at this moment Matt M. is thoroughly enjoying an orange- too much pizza and pasta already I guess.

next stop: Washington, D.C.!!

A few of us worked through the night to get the house ready for shipping. The house came apart with no problems.

Zinc cladding

Tom sent me this terrific photo of the finished zinc cladding. I love how sleek, modern and also residential it looks. It's very appropriate for a solar home on Long Island. hk

Post Send Off Party Observations

I find it interesting to note that there was a constant stream of people visiting the site after the send off party Friday and well into Saturday. The media exposure and the name OPEN House served to heighten accessibility, inviting people from a variety of demographic segments and lifestyles. All had an extreme thirst to understand this technology and several attempted to hire the students to build them a home. Many asked me as I approached the site, "Is this the open house?" The name seemed to convey a refreshing technological transparency that is often missing in society today.
