On the Mall

We're here, in Washington D.C! Feels great to be back. The house went together smoothly the first night/morning. The deck was completed yesterday and for some the adrenaline lasted late into the night and so the planters went in too. We lifted the batteries into their home in the deck (a future gardening tools box, I think) and wired them up. Solar panels are getting a slow start because the sun is intense and the heat sweltering. At least it's not raining. Everyone's excited because we just received the pod and there was a giant jar of peanut butter inside. Spirits are up and at this moment Matt M. is thoroughly enjoying an orange- too much pizza and pasta already I guess.

Sustainability is a way of thinking. It is about energy efficiency, durability and economy. It is about culture and context. It is about understanding history and modes of development. It is about practicality and pragmatics. Most importantly, it is about the ethics of design – truth and reason over style and prescription.

Sustainable or Green architecture is not a prescriptive formula. In other words just because you pick so called green materials and get your LEED rating it doesn’t mean that you have embraced sustainability or green building.

The projects for the Solar Decathlon, particularly this shining example developed by NYIT, make clear the way in which we should envision the future of housing and all future building development.

Thank you all for your hard work and dedication toward keeping our world sustainable for the survival of our future generations.
